Color Calibration vs ICC Profiling
Calibration makes the press consistent. Profiling tells your software how that press reproduces color on each paper.
Calibration
Calibration adjusts the press so it behaves the same way today as it did last week. We measure tone curves and solid density with a spectrometer and correct the press to a target such as G7, GRACoL or FOGRA.
ICC Profiling
A profile is a description of how a press and paper combination reproduces color. Color management software uses it to convert files so the printed result matches what was intended. Each paper needs its own profile.
Why Order Matters
Calibrate first, then profile. A profile made on an unstable press will be wrong as soon as the press drifts.
Keeping It in Control
Presses drift with use, humidity and parts wear. Re-measure on a schedule, after major service, and when you change paper. A calibration report gives you a record to show customers.
